NJ Apartment Fire, Guilty Sex Offender Annoys Federal Judge, Philadelphia City Council Opens 2015

An apartment fire lit up the night sky Wednesday in Edgewater, New Jersey leaving hundreds of residents displaced. Gusty winds and frigid temperatures made it difficult for firefighters to get control of the flames. Smoke from the fire could even be seen across the Hudson River in Midtown Manhattan. No injuries were reported.

A New York man convicted of sex trafficking young women – from Philadelphia to Atlantic City and elsewhere – tried to explain his actions at sentencing, and did himself no favors. Justin Williams was convicted last September. But he insisted he didn’t make anybody do anything, he “never hurt” any of the victims, and they were “crazy allegations that popped out of the woodwork.” Judge Joyner finally cut him off, saying he was neither remorseful nor willing to take responsibility for his conduct, and he sentenced Williams to 30 years in prison.

Philadelphia City Council opens its 2015 session this morning with an assortment of weighty issues ahead – including sick leave and the mayor’s final budget. And for the 17 members of council, 2015 means election time, with the all-important May primary looming. On their official agenda in the coming months will be Mayor Nutter’s final budget, which he will unveil in early March. That discussion will likely be dominated by the enormous financial needs of the School District.
