Wolf Says No Ban On Gas Drilling, Black Madam Trial Begins, CCD Says Housing District Strong

Governor Wolf, who proposed a tax on natural gas drilling last week says he wants the natural gas industry to succeed in the state and denies that he's threatening a ban. Wolf insists he wants a vibrant natural gas industry , and not just for Pennsylvania’s sake. He added he "disagrees" with New York's ban on natural gas drilling.

A key witness in the murder trial of the “Black Madam” has gone south on the prosecution, and she won’t testify at trial, which is scheduled to start this morning. But the judge has ruled the prosecution can present her testimony from an earlier hearing. The prosecution says Theresa Gyamfi is a necessary witness — she testified at an earlier hearing that she traveled with her friend, victim Claudia Aderotimi, from London to Philadelphia for buttocks enhancement. They lay side by side during the procedure and her friend started suffering almost immediately and was dead within hours. The defense argued the witness’ account should not be admitted because it can not be cross-examined. But the judge has ruled the defense had a full and fair cross-examination at the earlier hearing, so it comes in. Defendant Padge Victoria Windslowe has pleaded not guilty.

According to a new report released earlier this week, Philadelphia’s housing market is holding strong. Paul Levy, president of the Center City District, says his organization’s annual housing report shows exponentially increasing growth in Philadelphia. Levy says two demographic groups stand out when it comes to those moving into the city: empty-nesters and young professional millennials. He also says better job growth means the poverty rate would be down, the unemployment rate would be down and the tax base of the city could be stronger to support schools.
