Ferguson Cops Shot; Ex-PhillyCop Found Dead; Prisons Set to Close

Two officers were shot in front of the Ferguson, Missouri Police Department early this morning as demonstrators gathered after the resignation of the city's police chief in the wake of a scathing Justice Department report alleging bias in the police department and court. A 32-year-old officer was shot in the face and a 41-year-old officer was shot in the shoulder. Both are hospitalized in serious condition. No word on the shooters.

Former police Lt. George Holcombe, who was awaiting a preliminary hearing on aggravated assault charges next Friday, was found dead in his home on Tuesday. Forty two year old Holcombe served as a cop for 23 years, from 1991 until he was fired from the force in November. The cause and manner of his death remain unknown.

Falling crime rates and a shift to community based punishment for petty offenses has led to fewer inmates in Philadelphia’s minimum security prisons. Two overflow jails are now scheduled to close – the Cannery for female inmates in Holmesburg and a facility for men in University City. The closures will save several thousand dollars a month in rent, staffing, food services and other costs.
