1,000 See Darby Officer Laid to Rest; Teen Critical After ATV Crash; Pennsauken Fire/Home Collapse

About 1,000 people came to St. Joseph's Church in Collingdale on Saturday to pay their respects to fallen Officer Mark Hudson for a viewing followed by a multi-denominational service. The 26-year-old Darby police officer and Yeadon volunteer firefighter was shot and killed in his Glenolden home last week, allegedly by his girlfriend 27-year-old Tyaina Finch. Hudson had been a part-time member of the police force for 4 years and had joined the fire company as a junior in high school at age 16. He was remembered by both Darby Borough Police Chief Robert Smythe and Chief Michael Dilenno, Yeadon Fire Co., as an excellent public servant and a great person, a 'shining star', a 'helper of the helpless.' Hudson was an organ donor and donated his eyes so that someone could now see.

A 15-year-old is in critical condition after an ATV crash in the Cobbs Creek section of Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon. It happened after 2:00 pm near 58th and Cobbs Creek Parkway. Two teens were racing ATVs in the street in traffic when one flipped over and threw the rider off onto the pavement. The boy was bleeding from the head and was not wearing a helmet. Two women from a neighboring church happened to be trauma nurses and performed CPR until medics arrived. He was tranported to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. This is the third serious accident in the past two weeks involving off road vehicles on city streets. A 38-year-old man was killed on Thursday when he flipped his ATV in Mayfair. Last week also in Mayfair, a 19-year-old on a dirt bike also died when he collided with a SUV while riding a dirt bike. It is illegal to park or operate ATVs on streets, sidewalks, and parks in Philadelphia.

A Camden County, New Jersey home collapsed this afternoon after being engulfed in flames. It happened around 3:30 pm at Union Avenue and Stow Road in Pennsauken. Firefighters arrived to heavy flames and smoke. The fire had started in the yard but the high winds today blew it into the house. The winds also made it hard for firefighters using hoses outside. The building started to collapse into itself around 3:45 pm. They were able to bring the fire under control after an hour. The family was away at the time and no one was injured. The family's Chihuahua was inside and did not make it. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The house had previously survived a fire in 2006. The house belongs to the mother of volunteer firefighter Kevin Sochanchak. Sochanchak himself was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer in September and has been undergoing treatments. His brother and sister still live with his mother. They lost their father two years ago. Donation pages have been set up: GoFundMe page for the family and GoFundMe page for Kevin
