Lincoln Drive Closure; Mom Drops Baby From Bridge; Archdiocese Considering Closing Parishes

Lincoln Drive was a mess during rush hour this morning. One person was rushed to the hospital following an accident that forced the southbound side of the busy Philadelphia roadway to shut down during the busiest time of the day. Lincoln Drive was closed near Gypsy Lane after two cars collided sending one person to Einstein Medical Center.

A 19-year-old mom allegedly threw her 1-year-old child off a bridge 52 feet above the Lehigh River, then jumped off the bridge herself. It happened Sunday afternoon on the Hamilton Street Bridge in Allentown. Eyewitnesses say 5 police cars arrived within one minute. The woman made it to the bank and collapsed. The baby was pulled from the river 700 yards downstream and revived by police using CPR. Both are hospitalized in serious condition.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is considering the fates of five churches in the Lower Northeast, part of a long-term study of how to stabilize and sustain parishes. Archbishop Charles Chaput acknowledged that the "complex and difficult issues . . . will require further study and discussion before any final decisions are made." Meanwhile, Chaput delivered definitive news regarding nine suburban parishes - three in Delaware County and six in Montgomery County, declaring they would continue on independently.
