Amtrak Passengers Accounted For; Engineer Not Talking; Positive Train Control Would Prevented Crash

About a dozen passengers remain missing from the Amtrak derailment as officials work to reconcile Amtrak's manifest with hospital records and other information. The death toll could rise as crews continue to comb through the wreckage. Clean-up at the site, where all but two cars have been removed, is underway.

UPDATE 1:00 pm: An 8th passenger was found dead at the scene Thursday morning by cadaver dogs. All 243 passengers and crew are now accounted for. He has been identified as Robert Gildersleeve from Baltimore who worked at EcoLab.

UPDATE 5:00 pm: 47-year-old Laura Finamore of NYC has been identified as one of the fatalities. She worked as a senior account director at Cushman & Wakefield.

The engineer of the train that derailed has been identified as 32 year old Brandon Bostian and he is not talking. The big question is “Why were you going 106 miles per hour into a 50 mile per hour curve?” Bostian is refusing to answer questions and his lawyer says Bostian has no recollection of the actual crash. He just remembers opening his eyes after the crash and searching for his phone.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the deadly derailment could have been prevented if Amtrak had installed an electronic train-control system that would have automatically slowed the train down and is already in place on other parts of its rail network. The NTSB has been calling for "positive train control" for years, and federal law requires that it be installed by the end of this year on all passenger railroads and major freight carriers.
