WRNB-FM Moves Down the Philadelphia Radio Dial

On September 1st, Philadelphia Urban Contemporary radio station WRNB-FM located at 107.9 began simulcasting their programming on sister station WPHI-FM whose frequency is 100.3 FM. It is expected that station owners, Radio One will swap call letters for the frequencies along with the format changes. WRNB's Urban Contemporary format will stay on the more powerful signal at 100.3. The younger leaning hip-hop format called "The Beat" is expected to reappear on the 107.9 frequency with a new name - most likely "Hot", a name used by Radio One owned stations in other markets around the country

100.3 The Beat recently let go of morning team Star & Buc Wild and Program Director Boogie D was transferred to Radio-One’s St. Louis stations. Radio One is attempting to more effectively compete with Philadelphia urban music format leaders Power 99 and WDAS-FM.

Commercial free internet radio is gaining popularity in Philadelphia. Listeners who enjoy the music on WDAS-FM 105.3 and WRNB-FM 107.9 and 100.3 are discovering the new commercial free Sapphire on internet radio at iRadioPhilly.com.

Sapphire offers the same blend of music as Philadelphia radio stations WDAS-FM and WRNB-FM.

Hip Hop is expected to return to the radio dial at 107.9 today at 5 pm this afternoon. It will probably be rebranded at Hot 107.9 instead of 107.9 The Beat, but the music will be the same.

For right now, it seems that 107.9 will be called Michael Vick Radio with music chosen by the Eagles quarterback. We'll see how long this lasts, maybe through the Labor Day weekend.

107.9 has stopped it's Michael Vick Radio stunt today 9/8 at 5pm. It was fun(ny) while it lasted. As expected, they've ditched "The Beat" moniker and debuted as Hot 107.9 Philly. We can probably expect the station to be a little less edgy than a straight up hip hop, and be more of a rhythmic hits/pop station. Only time will tell. The first song was Nelly "Hot in Herre". They've also added the syndicated Rickey Smiley Morning Show to the lineup.
