The chairman of Temple University's physics department was charged yesterday in an alleged scheme to provide sensitive U.S. defense technology to entities and government in China. Federal prosecutors allege Xiaoxing Xi, a world-renowned expert in the field of superconductivity, sought prestigious appointments in China in exchange for sharing information on a device invented by a private company in the US. Xi is a 47-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen who lives in Penn Valley.

Montgomery County is prepared to take the last parcel of land by force, if necessary in order to complete the network of towers for its new countywide emergency-radio system. Commissioners voted to allow staff to take a property on Shoemaker Road in Pottstown "through condemnation for Public Safety Purposes," if necessary. Negotiations with landowner, PPL Electric Utilities Corp. have stalled because PPL is selling the land to another entity.

The president of the Boy Scouts of America, Robert Gates made national news Thursday by saying that the organization should allow gay scoutmasters. Locally, scout leaders are falling in line. Daniel Templar, scout executive for the Cradle of Liberty Council, said his organization would abide by a national decision, "We must deal with the world as it is, not as we might wish it to be."
