WYSP 94.1 FM Changes Format, A Philadelphia Legend Gone

Philadelphia radio station WYSP-FM 94.1 is gone. Owner CBS has decided that the Philadelphia rock radio legend is no longer a worthwhile format to occupy the 94.1 FM frequency in the City of Brotherly Love. Instead, the powerful FM channel will be turned over to its AM sports talk sister station WIP.

After programming rock music for decades, native Philadelphia rock fans are mourning the loss of another FM music outlet to a talk format. Sure, business is business and it's all about making money with valuable FCC issued real estate on the FM dial. But we hate to see WYSP go.

Growing up in Philadelphia in the 70's, Sonny Fox teamed with Bob Leonard was arguably the best morning show of its time. Fox and Leonard helped push WYSP to the top of the ratings. WYSP was home to so many great air personalities over the years. Some of the more memorable include:

Howard Stern
Sean McKay and Jerry Abear
Scruff Connors
Michael Picozzi
David Lee Roth
Opie and Anthony
Kid Chris
Danny Bonaduce
Randy Kotz
Pam Merley
Debbi Calton
Andre Gardner
Garry Bridges
Denny Somach
Anita Gevinson
Steve Sutton
Ed Sciaky
Matt & Huggy
Tommy Conwell
Mel Toxic
Couzin Ed
Don & Mike
Barsky (with Kim Douglas/Vinny da Crumb)
Robin Lee
Russ Albums
Cerphe

Some will say the reason for the change is that the Rock format is dying. This could not be further from the truth. The problem lies with the business burdens of FM radio. Perhaps that's why so many are turning to internet radio to fill the void.

If you are looking for a place to find rock now that WYSP is gone, iRadioPhilly has plenty of commercial free listening options to check out. Rock radio may be leaving FM but it is exploding on the internet. Click a link to hear the future of Rock radio:
