Rutgers Football Player Arrested; Positive Train Control Delays; McNeal Mansion Doomed

Rutgers University football cornerback Darian Dailey has been arrested on robbery charges in Florida. Nineteen year old Dailey of Bradenton, Florida, and 20 year old Trazelle Johnson robbed a bicyclist at gunpoint about 2 a.m. Sunday in Sarasota. The pair, who were in a car, were arrested in Manatee County after the victim gave investigators the license plate number of the car. Dailey is being held on bail set at $150,000. Rutgers coach Kyle Flood is gathering facts and will take the appropriate action.

After a 2008 train collision killed 25 people in California, Congress mandated new safety measures to prevent more high-speed disasters. But the mandate for Positive Train Control requires the use of radio spectrum, used for TV, Radio, police scanners and space exploration. Amtrak and most other passenger rail agencies have been unable to acquire those licenses, leaving them short of the bandwidth needed to use the new safety systems. More than half of commuter rail lines do not have Positive Train Control and most rail lines will miss a year-end deadline to activate the safety system.

The McNeal Mansion built along the Delaware River in Burlington City for industrialist Andrew McNeal in 1890 is facing demolition. Few city officials think the historic structure next to the shuttered U.S. Pipe manufacturing plant he founded is worth sparing, given the years of deterioration. A 2001 fire at the mansion vacant for 50 years has left it a three-story masonry skeleton. Earlier this month, a developer appeared before the city's Historic Preservation Commission to present plans to raze the structure.
