Lightning Strike Injures Broomall Man; Mayfair Shooting; Teachers Reject Archdiocese Proposal

A man is in the hospital after lightning struck in Delaware County. A father of three was walking his dog in Broomall shortly before 6 p.m. last night when a quick-moving storm formed overhead. As the man walked down the sidewalk and up his driveway, lightning suddenly struck and the man fell to the ground. Witnesses say the man was knocked unconscious after a flash and a thunderous clap. The man claimed he had tingling in his legs when he regained consciousness. Investigators say they didn’t find any burns on his body. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

An argument between three men led to one of them being shot in Philadelphia's Mayfair section late Wednesday night. The incident happened just before 11:30 p.m. along the 3200 block of Cottman Avenue. Police say a 20-year-old man was shot in the arm following a dispute with two other men. The victim managed to run to a nearby 7-Eleven store for help. The police were called and he was rushed to the hospital in stable condition. Both the suspects ran off after the shooting. Police are interviewing witnesses.

Teachers at the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's 17 high schools, educating 13,500 students, unanimously voted Wednesday night to reject a proposed one-year contract, saying that the wage increase the archdiocese offered would not even cover the rise in medical-insurance premiums. The archdiocese issued a statement expressing its disappointment with the vote. The existing one-year contract expires Aug. 31, but both sides have been trying to reach what is called an "early bird" settlement, limited to salaries and benefits.
