An off-duty Philadelphia police officer shot and killed a would be robber last night at a Pizza Shop on Rising Sun Avenue. The off duty, plain clothes cop was ordering at the counter of Rising Sun Pizza Shop when two men entered the store, held a gun to his head, robbed him of $20 and told him to lie on the floor. When the thieves turned to rob the cash register, the detective got up, pulled his gun and announced he was a cop. A gun battle followed and one of the thieves was shot and killed. The other escaped. The officer was not hurt.

A proposed new bill in New Jersey would prohibit parents from smoking in the car if children are on board. Senate bill 2883 is said to be intended to protect children under the age of 17. Critics say this is a case of the government overstepping, trying to legislate adult behavior and choices. If passed, drivers would receive a ticket and a $100 fine.

Xiaoxing Xi, the Temple University professor accused of sharing sensitive technology with his native China pleaded not guilty before a federal magistrate yesterday. 57 year old Xi, the former chairman of Temple's physics department, is confident the judicial system will exonerate him. Xi, of Penn Valley, also a naturalized U.S. citizen, was accused of sharing a device and technology in the field of superconductivity with entities in China, including the government.
