9/11 10th Anniversary Stirs Emotions and Pride

The 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States will stir emotions and memories across Philadelphia and America. Most will remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when the news of the attacks broke. Many witnessed the second plane hitting the World Trade Center live on TV and the ultimate collapse of both towers which killed all of those trapped inside as well as the fire and rescue workers trying to save them.

The Pentagon was hit and United Flight 93 appeared headed for Washington when passengers on board heard of the other suicide attacks and decided to fight back. All on board sacrificed their lives in order to save countless others on the ground.

Immediately after the attacks, all air traffic was grounded for several days. The skies grew eerily silent. The attacks had shaken Americans to the core.

Many of us in Philadelphia lost friends or family members on 9/11. Many more were lost in the war that followed. We feared for the lives of our friends and family in the US military.

After the initial shock from the attacks, America showed its true resiliency. Shaken, but not broken, American pride emerged. American flags were everywhere. We publicly thanked our firefighters, police and military as we grew to appreciate their role in what makes America great.

In many ways, the attacks of 9/11 galvanized America. They demonstrated to our enemies and to us, that America is more than a piece of land or a spot on a map. America is people - individuals who consider our freedom, rights and independence to be precious.

Be sure to fly your American flag this weekend.
