The Taney Dragons Little League baseball team was honored today with the John Wanamaker Athletic Award. The award has been given yearly since 1961 and honors "the athlete, team or organization which has done the most to reflect credit upon Philadelphia and to the team or sport in which they excel." Past recipients have included Chuck Bednarik, Mike Schmidt, Julius Erving, Joe Frazer, Dawn Staley, various championship teams, and more Philly greats. Over the past year, the Taney Dragons grew from a regular neighborhood team to a championship caliber squad representing not only Philadelphia but the entire Mid-Atlantic at the Little League World Series. Behind the strong pitching of the only girl to ever win a game at that level they came so close to winning it all, but exhibited strength and poise in the loss. Mo'ne Davis became a break out star during the tournament and handled the attention with more maturity and grace than most adults. The Robert P. Levy Community Service Award was awarded to Special Olympics of Philadelphia.

One person has died and another is in the hospital after a fire broke out in a home in Northeast Philadelphia on Friday morning. It happened around 7:30 a.m. on the 600 block of Avon Street in Somerton. The father was able to escape through the basement, but his adult daughter was found dead on the second floor and his wife was clinging to life on the first floor. The mother was rushed to Aria Health/Torresdale in critical condition. The daughter is the seventh fatality due to fire this year. Firefighters say the home did not have any working smoke alarms. They did service the home back in 2001 but they would have had to been updated. No one else was injured. The cause of the fire in under investigation.

The Limerick Township Police Department has posted a video to their Facebook page of a motorcycle driver riding recklessly and crashing. The video was actually taken by the driver himself using a GoPro camera attached to his helmet. It happened on June 7th on Lightcap Road which ends in a T intersection. The rider is speeding down the roadway at 106 mph and goes off the road when it terminates at the intersection. Luckily he was not significantly injured. He is facing numerous traffic violations.

Why you should ALWAYS drive defensively. Why you should NOT drive 106 MPH on Lightcap Rd and not know it ends in a T...
