Power Outages; Delineators Tested on Bike Lanes; Police Mural Defaced

Last night's 75 mile per hour winds and severe weather toppled trees, shut down roads, cut power and brought mass transit to a standstill. Hundreds of thousands of people were left without power. Delaware and Chester counties in PA got slammed. iRadioPhilly's power grid was down for hours. Cape May, Gloucester and Camden counties in N.J. were the hardest hit. Down wires and trees are still getting cleaned up after many interruptions to routines and commutes this morning.

New devices are in place on the Walnut Street Bridge that are designed to separate the bicycle lanes from the car lanes. Called delineators, these reflector topped posts are anchored to the street to keep vehicles from veering into the bike lane. So far the test has bikers saying “thank you” and some drivers asking “why?” The pilot program will be evaluated in the Fall including complicating factors such as how the delineators will affect snow plowing operations.

A mural memorializing fallen officers outside Olney's 35th Police District was tagged with graffiti chalked on the sidewalks and brick walls beside a memorial honoring Chuck Cassidy, Walter Barclay and Bob Hayes, officers gunned down while on duty. Activists with the group Philly Coalition for R.E.A.L. (Racial, Economic and Legal) Justice took credit for the markings in an online Flickr page.
