Source4Teachers Pay, National LGBT Celebration, Philadelphia School Building Conditions Poor

Veteran substitute teachers are frustrated over the pay being offered by a company now managing subs for Philadelphia schools. John Renfro calls the $90-a-day being offered to Philadelphia substitutes next year "a joke." He says last school year, he made more than twice that under the PFT contract. District spokesman Fernando Gallard says Source4Teachers is paying market rates in suburban districts. The teachers union, though, has filed an unfair labor practice complaint.

The LGBT civil rights movement began in Philadelphia 50 years ago this 4th of July — and to mark the milestone — the city is kicking off a national four day celebration. Events begin today and include appearances by LGBT pioneers, entertainers and more. The National LGBT 50th Anniversary Celebration includes panels, a screening of the documentary “Gay Pioneers,” parties, fireworks, concerts and more and is said to be the nation’s largest celebration of its kind. The main highlight is the one hour ceremony outside of Independence Mall on July 4th. Comedian Wanda Sykes is the emcee.

City Controller Alan Butkovitz says his inspection finds unsanitary and dangerous conditions inside Philadelphia school buildings. Butkovitz last inspected school buildings in 2008, and he says not much has improved since. Visits to 20 schools turned up water leaks, missing fire extinguishers, mold, cockroaches, exposed insulation, uncovered electrical panels, collapsed ceilings and unsanitary bathrooms. District spokesman Fernando Gallard says the district welcomes the report, to highlight the need for more funding.
