Ruling Says Schools Must Rehire Counselors; Ride The Ducks Lawsuit; Cosby Offered Tuition

An independent arbitrator has ordered the School District of Philadelphia to restore a full-time counselor to every school and to give back pay to laid-off counselors who should have been recalled based on seniority. The ruling says the district violated its contract with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers when it failed to recall laid-off counselors in seniority order. If upheld, the ruling will cost the cash-strapped schools millions of dollars.

The family of a woman struck and killed by a Duck Boat, an amphibious tourist boat driving on a downtown Philadelphia street last spring has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the company and the city. Attorneys for the family of 68-year-old Elizabeth Karnicki of Beaumont, Texas allege that the May 8th accident was due in part to "huge blind spots" on the Ride The Ducks vehicle and that the vehicles should be banned from Philadelphia streets. Ride The Ducks said their "thoughts and prayers" remain with the family and "safety is of paramount importance”.

According to court filings unsealed this week, Bill Cosby offered to pay college tuition for two women who alleged he drugged and sexually assaulted them. The scholarships were not intended to buy his accusers' silence, Cosby maintained in the 2005 deposition. But both offers were made immediately after the women confronted him about the alleged sexual encounters.
