Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput released a statement today regarding the recent firing of a teacher at Waldron Mercy Academy in Lower Merion, Montgomery County. Margie Winters was presumably fired from her job as religious education director because she is in a same sex marriage. Chaput said, "Schools describing themselves as Catholic take on the responsibility of teaching and witnessing the Catholic faith in a manner true to Catholic belief. There's nothing complicated or controversial in this. It's a simple matter of honesty. I'm very grateful to the Religious Sisters of Mercy and to the principal and board members of Waldron Mercy for taking the steps to ensure that the Catholic faith is presented in a way fully in accord with the teaching of the Church. They've shown character and common sense at a moment when both seem to be uncommon." Waldron Mercy is a private school and is not governed by the archdiocese. Many parents and students have shown support for Winters.

A Lancaster man has been found guilty of murder in the 2013 crash on the Roosevelt Boulevard that killed a mother and three of her children as they crossed the street. 24-year-old Khusen Akhmedov was found guilty of four counts of third degree murder in the non-jury trial. Akhmedov hit the family as he was drag racing 32-year-old Ahmen Holloman. Holloman pled guilty last week to four counts of vehicular homicide. His car did not touch the victims. He was sentenced to five to ten years in prison. 27-year-old Samara Banks along with her 4-year-old, a 23-month-old and a 7-month-old died in the accident. Her 5-year-old son survived. Akhmedov will be sentenced on October 1st. He could get 80 to 160 years for the four counts.
