Attorney Charged in Rape of Client; Murder Rate Rises; I'll Be There for Pope Francis

A Montgomery County attorney was arrested Monday and charged with raping one of his clients. Vincent A. Cirillo Jr., a defense attorney with offices in Norristown, allegedly raped a woman whom he had been hired to represent. The alleged rape occurred on Aug. 3, officials said, and the woman reported it to West Norriton police three days later. 56 year old Cirillo, of Gladwyne, is the son of the late Superior Court Judge Vincent A. Cirillo. The accused says he plans to fight the charges against him.

The number of murders has skyrocketed in many major U.S. cities in 2015 and while killings are up in Philadelphia this year, the rise is far less dramatic than the increases seen in other places. Through Aug. 31, Philadelphia had a 3.6-percent rise over last year while many big cities are experiencing far larger increases. In Milwaukee, killings are up 76 percent. St. Louis has seen a 60-percent increase. Murders are up 56 percent in Baltimore and 44 percent in Washington, D.C.

There is a new PR campaign encouraging people to come to Philadelphia during Pope Francis’ visit. Named “I’ll Be There” the campaign hopes to portray the event as a fun, friendly, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Many hotel rooms are still available and SEPTA has thousands of rail passes unsold. Logistics and planning by the city and Secret Service along with false rumors of 8 foot security fences have scared many people away.
