Woman Charged Faked Fundraising; Abp Chaput Pokes Trump on Immigration; SAT-ACT Essays Dropped

An East Norriton woman has been arrested and charged with creating an online fund-raising page for a friend whose husband had pancreatic cancer, but keeping the money herself. Traci Small Kratzer was charged Tuesday with theft, allegedly taking more than $8,000 by setting up a fraudulent online charity fund-raiser at YouCaring.com. While advertised as a fund-raiser for John Henson who is battling pancreatic cancer, the bank statements show withdrawals for purchases at Target, Toys R Us, McDonald's, Rite Aid, and Sunoco

Philadelphia Archbishop Charles J. Chaput waded into the debate on immigration Tuesday. He outlined the social costs of a "flawed immigration system" and reprised a Christian's obligation "to protect migrant families." The address he titled "Sanity, Indifference, and the American Immigration Debate" took a poke at Republican White House candidate Donald Trump when he said, "At least one of our presidential candidates has already made the national immigration debate ugly with a great deal of belligerent bombast." Pope Francis will likely carry the immigration message when he visits Philadelphia in a few weeks.

Essays will get less emphasis in the admissions process at two of the region's elite schools, Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania. Penn made the announcement in July and Swarthmore announced Tuesday that it would not consider the essay section of the soon-to-be redesigned SAT, nor the ACT. It will, however, continue to require students to submit an essay on "Why Swarthmore" with their applications.
