Lits Building Lights Up, Basilica Of Saints Peter and Paul, Margie Winters Invited To Meet Pope

The Lit Brothers Building, now called the Lits Building, is lighting up 7th to 8th and Market Streets. 484 color-changing LEDs illuminate the hundreds of windows, while 19 spotlights provide the columns with a gradient fill. It's brighter by the street, dimmer near the giant digital screens mounted along the roofline. The big screens will stream video of the Pope’s speech at Independence Hall, the Festival of Families, and the Mass.

The Dome on top of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul lit up Monday evening with artwork that depicts the struggle felt by homeless people around the world. Artist Meg Saligman is behind the video artwork on the dome. She’s also behind the “Knotted Grotto” on the side of the basilica. Both art displays have the same message. Her artwork will be projected on the dome from dusk until 12:30 a.m. every night until Sunday.

A Roman Catholic teacher fired over her same-sex marriage says she has been invited to the White House to help welcome Pope Francis. Margie Winters said Monday she hopes the pontiff will address issues facing gay Catholics during his visit to the U.S. this week. The 50-year-old Winters says she lost her job this year at a private Catholic grade school outside Philadelphia over her 2007 same-sex marriage. Winters hopes to get a chance to speak to the pope. She would ask him to extend his message of inclusion to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Catholics. She says her invitation came through the Human Rights Campaign, an LGBT advocacy group.
