Pope Francis spoke today at the Capitol building in front a joint meeting of Congress, the first such appearance by a pontiff. He spoke on many topics including the abolition of the death penalty, immigration, our role in protecting the environment, poverty, and the importance of the family. Pope Francis included references to American figures Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Thomas Merton, and Dorothy Day. Following his address to Congress, Pope Francis went to St. Patrick's in Washington D.C. and visited Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington. He spoke to a group of poor and homeless served by Catholic Charities and also shared lunch with them. He travelled to New York City in the afternoon and celebrated Evening Prayer at St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC. Tomorrow he'll addres the UN and celebrate mass at Madison Square Garden.

A man was fatally stabbed on the 100 block on Broad Street Thursday morning near Cherry Street outside of the Pennsylvania Convention Center. It happened at 6:42 a.m. The 47-year-old man was on way to work when he was stabbed once in the chest. The man was rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:10 a.m. The man has been identified, but his name is not being released pending family notification. At this time they do not have anyone in custody, but detectives are collecting video from the area. Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan of the Department's homeland security unit says that this is just an isolated and "in no way connected" to the Papal Visit or World Meeting of Families which is going on at the Convention Center.
