Philly Mag Apology Over Photo; Clerk Says She Met with Pope; Philly Tall Ship Ready to Sail

Philadelphia Magazine issued an apology on its website Tuesday afternoon after an onslaught of negative reaction to the cover of its October 2015 issue. The lead story on the diversity of education in city schools features a photo that has no African American students, even though their school is 60 percent non-white. Tom McGrath, the magazine's editor, took responsibility for the photo, which shows seven white kids from Albert M. Greenfield Elementary School sitting along a wall outside its Center City campus.

The Kentucky clerk who went to jail for defying a federal court's orders to issue same-sex marriage licenses says she met briefly with Pope Francis during his historic visit to the United States and he told her to stay strong. Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, didn't deny the encounter but would not comment. According to her lawyer, Rowan County clerk Kim Davis and her husband met privately with Pope Francis last Thursday afternoon at the Vatican Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Philadelphia’s tall sailing vessel is ready to go back in the water. After spending more than a month in dry dock, being overhauled from top to bottom by volunteers, the Gazela, the city's official tall ship and the country's oldest square-rigged wooden vessel, will again be able to sail this week. On Thursday, the 114-year-old ship will leave dry dock at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, its home since the end of July, and sail back to its usual home at the north end of Penn's Landing.
