Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey Not Running for President

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie announced today that he will not seek the Republican nomination to run for President. After much recent speculation, Christie officially declared his intentions to remain in the governor's mansion for now saying "now is not my time."

He said he had “a commitment to New Jersey that I simply will not abandon... So, New Jersey,” he added, “whether you like it or not, you’re stuck with me.”

Christie was elected in 2009. His national profile has undoubtedly risen since then, and especially in the past few weeks as speculation rose as to whether he'd join the Republican race. Recent speeches at party fundraisers, including one at the Reagan library in CA, have only added to that fervor. He has also been courted by large Republican donors, as well as some elected officials and party activists.

His decision to not run in 2012 puts the focus back on a Republican race that has seen candidates rise and fall in polls. Currently, Mitt Romney is leading with Rick Perry and Herman Cain following. Polls suggest that Christie might have initially entered the race in fourth place.

Christie sees his place in New Jersey for now. “For me the answer was never anything but no,” he said. “My job here in New Jersey was always my passion.” We'll just have to wait and see what his future plans are, 2016 and 2020. I do think that we will see him running at some point.
