Apple's Steve Jobs Passes at Age 56

The iconic and legendary former CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, has passed away today at age 56. He has been fighting cancer and other health issues the past few years. His death marks the end of that battle that took him away from Apple on extended hiatuses, the last ending with his resignation of CEO to Tim Cook in August.

This comes the day after Apple announced its upgraded iPhone 4S featuring faster processing speeds, a new camera, Siri voice recognition, as well as new apps and an upgrade to its mobile operating system iOS.

Jobs formed Apple in 1976 with Steve Wozniak. Together they revolutionized personal computing starting with the Apple I and extended the capabilities of interaction between person and computer with the Macintosh and it's graphical user interface and mouse. Jobs left Apple in 1985 amid creative differences. He returned in 1997 and brought the company out of a fall. Apple has gone on to launch Mac OS X, the iMac, iPod, iTunes music store, App Store, iPad, and iPhone, bringing Apple enormous success and to the top of the technology and business worlds. The company now is the most valuable in the US alongside ExxonMobil.

Apple's website has the following tribute:

"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."
