Southwest Philly 3 Alarm Fire, SRC City Council Deal, Chaput Attends Synod

Firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze Wednesday night at a vacant warehouse in Southwest Philadelphia. The fire was reported at about 8:30 p.m. near 70th Street and Cobbs Creek Parkway. Fire officials and neighbors say the building at one point was a paper warehouse. No injuries have been reported and there is no word on a cause.

The School Reform Commission has signed a deal promising to share more financial information with City Council. The agreement doesn’t expressly free-up $25 million in new city money that Council has been withholding from the School District — but it goes a long way toward doing that. Council president Darrell Clarke says the deal grew from the annual tensions when the district made its funding requests. Superintendent William Hite says under the deal the district will submit quarterly financial reports to Council.

Fresh off the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia and the successful World Meeting of Families congress, Philadelphia’s archbishop Charles Chaput is in the Vatican for the next three weeks for the synod on the family. The meeting of church leaders from across the globe was convened by Pope Francis to gather input on how the church looks at marriage and the family in society. Speaking at a briefing conducted by the Vatican Press Office, Chaput acknowledges there are some groups already lobbying for particular point of views regarding marriage, divorced Catholics and same sex-relationships.
Chaput was also elected to a leadership role in the English language group of clerics that includes representatives from not only the United States, but countries in Africa and Asia.
