Camden Riversharks Leaving Town; Kane Letter to Supreme Court; Philly Schools Almost Broke

The Camden Riversharks, the independent professional baseball team that has played at the city's waterfront Campbell's Field for 15 years, has ceased all operations, according to a statement from the team. The statement said the decision stemmed from "an inability" to reach an agreement on lease terms with the ballpark's owner, the Camden County Improvement Authority.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane says she will make public offensive emails of state Supreme Court Justice J. Michael Eakin to prove her contention that his misconduct was overlooked by the high court and the state Judicial Conduct Board. In a sharp letter to the Supreme Court, Kane lambasted the ethics board for its assertion that Eakin's messages were only "mildly pornographic." The public, Kane wrote, "upon viewing these emails in their totality, will see them for what they are: offensive."

Philly schools are close to broke. The Philadelphia School District will soon have to borrow money to make payroll through the end of the year. The School Reform Commission is to meet in coming days to authorize temporary borrowing that will allow the district to function until a state budget stalemate is resolved. Superintendent William R. Hite Jr. said that if there was no Pennsylvania budget by the end of the calendar year, he could not keep schools open even with the temporary borrowing.
