Bike and Ped Friendlier JFK Blvd and Market Street?

Traffic lanes on Market Street and JFK Boulevard have been reduced from four lanes to three for the next two weeks to test if the streets can be more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly.

The curbside lane on the north side of Market and the curbside lane on the south side of JFK will be closed between 15th and 20th streets.

The test began Saturday and continues through Oct. 23.

The trial-run is a joint project of the Mayor's Office of Transportation and Utilities and the Center City District.

During the test period, traffic engineers will monitor the roadways to see if permanent lane closures are possible.

Paul Levy, president and chief executive officer of the Center City District, said he began talking with property owners on the streets two years ago to see how the city could improve the on-street experience for bikers and walkers.

"[They] were clear in their desire to enhance these corridors with new planted medians as well as make the . . . commercial district more competitive by improving accessibility for bicyclists while maintaining adequate traffic flow and loading operations," Levy said.
