It is crunch time for high school seniors to get in their college applications, as the deadline approaches for area universities. Temple University has seen an increase of 12% in the number of college applicants so far. Some of the interest has been sparked by the national attention the football team has earned. This past week, Temple had its largest-ever open house with 6-thousand prospective students and their families on campus, visiting. If you want to be an Owl, the deadline to apply is March 1st.

Before being Chief spokesperson for SEPTA, Jerri Williams worked in the FBI’s Philadelphia office, and is now making a big career change. She’ll announce, today, that she’s leaving SEPTA, not for another employer, but to pursue her dream of becoming a crime novelist. That first novel, Pay to Play, is already “on submission” in New York publishing houses. She calls it “edgy”. The plot revolves around a female FBI agent investigating corruption in the Philadelphia strip club industry. With more than 20 years of investigating fraud for the FBI, Williams says she already has novels two and three in her head.

A local company is offering $50,000 in grants to schools and non-profit organizations for environmental sustainability projects. The deadline for applications is Saturday. SCA Corporation is a global leader in paper towel, toilet tissue and other hygiene products. But the company also has a strong commitment to the environment. SCA’s Diane Spengler explains the SCA grant program offers grants to two groups: schools from levels K-through-12, and also 501-c3 non profit organizations. SCA’s looking for sustainability ideas. Applications can be accessed at SCA.com/en/us. The deadline is Saturday, November 14, but Spengler says it only takes about 15 minutes to fill out the application. At least four schools in the region received grants last year for projects like vertical gardening and school wide recycling.
