Richard Ross Will Be Next Police Commish; Cell Phone Tracks Carjack Suspects; Black Widow in Grapes

Mayor-elect Jim Kenney formally announced today that First Deputy Commissioner Richard Ross will be his appointment for police commissioner. He will take over from current commissioner Charles Ramsey who announced his retirement last month and will step down January 7th. Ross is a 26-year-veteran of the force and currently oversees day-to-day operations of the Philadelphia Police Department. He plans to continue and build upon the success the department has had under Ramsey. This includes foot patrols that allow officers to build relationships in communities and 'stop and frisk' when officers have reasonable suspicion.

Two suspects are in custody after a female doctor was carjacked and kidnapped in a Center City parking garage early Wednesday. It started around 6 a.m. at a Pennsylvania Hospital parking garage at 7th and Delancy. One armed suspect forced the doctor into her blue Honda Fit and drove to a gas station at York and Aramingo Avenues in Port Richmond. He tried to use her credit card at an ATM but failed. He then forced her to buy a pack of cigarettes. The clerk at the gas station sensed there was something wrong and went to the aid of the woman. The suspect took her cell phone and keys and left her at the gas station. Police were able to track the car to Kensington using the doctor's cell phone. She was not injured. The suspects identities have not yet been released. No word on any charges. The second suspect was picked up along the way after the carjacking.

A Bucks County woman got more than should bargained for after opening a batch of grapes. Amy Reed of Morrisville, PA bought a cluster of organic grapes from BJ's Wholesale Club in Langhorne, PA on Monday. When she opened the package on Tuesday morning, a potentially venomous black widow spider crawled out from the bunch. (see picture below) She is grateful that she found the spider before handling the fruit or giving it to her kids. Only the female spiders are poisonous, but are hard to tell apart from males. The spiders are dark with a reddish hourglass figure on their abdomen. The bite is rarely fatal but can cause severe muscle pain, cramps, and spasms. They notified BJ's and the grower. Welch's Organic Grapes said they've had this problem before because they don't use pesticides on organic produce and black widows are a problem in California where they are grown. BJ's issued this statement:

The safety and well being of our Members is the top priority at BJ's Wholesale Club. All of our clubs follow very strict food safety procedures. We have zero tolerance for products that do not adhere to our strict guidelines for fresh, high quality foods. We are aware of the black widow spider a Member found in a pack of organic grapes at our Langhorne, PA location. We have inspected all other grapes and discovered no spiders or other insects. We are taking this matter extremely seriously and working with our vendor to take appropriate measures.

Partly Cloudy, temperatures in the mid/upper 50s in Center City
