Wilmington 2 Alarm Fire, Comcast Franchise Agreement, Wage Theft Office Bill

Authorities say crews are battling a 2-alarm blaze at a Blue River Resources Recycling Company building. The fire was reported around 3 am Thursday morning at the 1000 block of Heald Street in Wilmington, Delaware. Authorities say recycling material caught fire.
The fire was placed under control shortly before 4 am. No injuries have been reported.

Comcast’s new 15-year franchise agreement with the city goes under the microscope in Philadelphia City Council Thursday afternoon. The city hopes to expand access and improve customer service as part of the deal. Nutter administration negotiators and Comcast executives are scheduled to testify first, followed by panels of stakeholders, such as Hannah Sassaman of the media mobilizing project. Sassaman is looking for three upgrades in the agreement. “To improve our customer service, expand affordable internet and make Comcast pay its fair share to our schools.” Comcast says, in an email, it will note it has hired 150 new technicians, is opening Xfinity “stores,” is providing low-cost internet essentials to 70,000 Philadelphians and pays 100 million dollars in direct and indirect taxes to schools.”

Philadelphia City Council is expected to pass a bill Thursday that would create an office in city government to investigate wage theft complaints. Nadie Hewka, an attorney for Community Legal Services sees a lot of those cases but, more often, she says, the victims don’t know what to do or where to turn, a situation the bill would remedy. Hewka says other cities that have created the job have seen the cases settled much faster.
