'Isis' pop station on iRadioPhilly. Is it time to change the name? You tell us.

When iRadioPhilly chose the name 5 years ago for its 'Isis' radio station featuring contemporary pop hits, terrorism was not an image we hoped to paint for the brand. In the mainstream public consciousness back then, the term Isis had nothing to do with the Islamic State or the terrorist acts ISIS has become known for. Now we may need to go back to the drawing board.

In 2010, iRadioPhilly set out to establish a non-offensive brand name that would appeal to a mostly female audience for our pop hits station. Research showed Isis was the name of an Egyptian Goddess. Isis the goddess was worshipped as the ideal mother and wife as well as the patroness of nature and magic. Isis was also a TV series in 1975 that featured an attractive female Archaeology school teacher who finds an amulet pendant that lets her turn into the superheroine goddess Isis and fight evil. To the brain trust here at iRadioPhilly, Isis was the perfect name for a radio station that would feature the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, Nickelback and Adele.

However in 2013, ISIS the militant group began to grab headlines with its acts of global terror. ISIS claimed responsibility for multiple murderous attacks including in Paris where hundreds were killed and injured. ISIS has publicly threatened to do the same in more countries around the world including the United States. In the minds of most people, the name ISIS is now known for radical terror, not ideal motherhood or a superhero goddess. Tune into Isis on iRadioPhilly and one can’t escape horrific images of terror every time the station name is mentioned.

iRadioPhilly has heard from a growing number of listeners who suggest it is time to drop the Isis brand in favor of a more positive handle. What do you think? Give us your suggestions.
