Longport Plastic Bag Vote, ROAR For Good Athena Jewelry

A New Jersey shore town is scheduled to vote Friday on a plan to reduce the use of plastic shopping bags. Longport officials are expected to vote on whether businesses will have to charge customers a dime for each plastic bag they use. Mayor Nick Russo says he wants people to be conscious of their waste. This would make Longport the first town in the state to adopt this green footprint idea.

A Philadelphia-based tech startup launched a campaign to fund its innovative product — a piece of wearable fashion jewelry designed to protect women from assault. Now, the product is going viral. Yasmine Mustafa, co-founder of ROAR For Good and Anthony Gold founded the B-corp with a social mission to protect women. The group launched their first product — ATHENA– a silver-dollar sized key fab that with the press of a button can sound an alarm and alert friends — if a woman is in danger. They passed their crowdfunding goal of $40,000 in two days. Three weeks later with days to go — they’re at $230,000. Mustafa and Gold will use the money to manufacture the device. ROAR plans to ship Athena in the spring. The crowdfunding campaign ends on Sunday.
