West Philly Ladder Truck Crash, Kobe Announces Retirement, Record Setting 76ers

Five firefighters were injured Sunday morning when their ladder truck crashed while responding to a call in West Philadelphia. It happened around 10 a.m. in the 5400 hundred block of Baltimore Avenue when the truck careened off the street. The ladder also slammed into another parked car and a light pole. All five firefighters were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center with what officials described as minor injuries.

Kobe Bryant has decided to retire after this season, ending his 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers. The 37-year-old Bryant made the announcement in a post on The Players’ Tribune on Sunday. The third-leading scorer in NBA history wrote a poem entitled “Dear Basketball” to announce his decision. “My heart can take the pounding. My mind can handle the grind. But my body knows it’s time to say goodbye,” Bryant wrote. “And that’s OK. I’m ready to let you go. I want you to know now. So we both can savor every moment we have left together. The good and the bad. We have given each other all that we have.” Bryant went straight from high school in suburban Philadelphia to the Lakers in 1996, and he earned five championship rings and 17 All-Star selections during two decades with the franchise — the longest tenure with one team in NBA history. Bryant also won two Olympic gold medals.

The Sixers set the record for most consecutive losses in all of professional sports on Saturday, dating back to last season. Now, they are close to making history again. After falling to the Memphis Grizzlies Sunday night, the Sixers are one defeat away from setting the NBA record for most losses to start a season.
A lot of fans aren’t happy, but they aren’t exactly surprised either. Other fans are optimistic about the young future. Some say they still trust General Manager Sam Hinkie’s plan to rebuild the team. Tomorrow night they’re home against the (2 -13) Lakers, and the Sixers could become a historically bad 0-19.

Weather

Mostly Cloudy. High 49 in Center City.
