Kenny Gamble Under Fire Over Royal Theatre Deterioration

South Street businesses are buzzing over the all the positive development along South Street in Philadelphia near 15th street. The buzz is mostly positive, but not when it comes to the still vacant Royal Theatre on South Street. The Royal was sold to Philadelphia music legend and real estate investor, Kenny Gamble 11 years ago with his promise to revitalize the building. However after an infusion of hundreds of thousands of tax dollars, nothing has changed.

The Royal Theatre is listed in both the Philadelphia and National Historic Registries. The Royal opened in May 1920, as a first-run cinema operated for and by black Americans. The theatre has hosted live performances from Bessie Smith, Pearl Bailey and Fats Waller, also feature in the murals that decorate the Royal.

Gamble had promised to make the Royal part of an entertainment district including a rhythm-&-blues hall of fame but it has turned into a blemish on Gamble's development track record.

Kenny Gamble's music is still very popular in Philadelphia and can be heard on these iRadioPhilly stations:
Bandstand
Bell Bottoms
8 Ball
Isis
