Archdiocese Closing Two More Churches; Wolf Call for Eakin Resignation; PA Budget

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia on Sunday announced the closure of two suburban churches, saying maintenance costs are too steep for their parent parishes. Immaculate Conception B.V.M. Church in Levittown will no longer serve as a worship site for Queen of the Universe Parish - which is more than $962,000 in debt - and will close. Also, St. Gertrude Church in West Conshohocken will shut down and no longer serve as a worship site for Conshohocken's St. Matthew Parish. The cost of maintaining the two churches was more than $215,000.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf on Sunday renewed his call for Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice J. Michael Eakin to resign, but the justice's lawyer said Eakin has no intention of stepping down. Wolf said Sunday that Eakin showed "a remarkable lack of judgment" by voting to fill a vacancy on the judicial disciplinary tribunal that is to weigh misconduct allegations against him in the pornographic email scandal. Wolf says "Justice Eakin is complicit in sharing emails that contain racist, sexist, and other derogatory materials, and his actions deserve the utmost scrutiny. Justice Eakin was also involved in attempting to appoint an individual to the Pennsylvania Court of Judicial Discipline, the very court charged with providing that scrutiny."

The Pennsylvania state Senate returned to Harrisburg Sunday night to begin considering portions of the budget agreement with Governor Wolf, even though the deal still appears to be near collapse. A key Senate committee voted Sunday evening to approve the $30.8 billion deal Wolf has struck with the Republican-controlled legislature - despite the House's concern that there were not enough votes in that chamber to pass it. Senators are moving forward with their intention to vote on the deal with the governor in the hopes that it can quickly resolve differences with the House.
