A northeast Philadelphia homeowner fatally shot a robbery suspect during a home invasion last night in the Lawncrest section. Police Chief Inspector Scott Small says a 35-year-old masked man barged into the home with a gun and announced a robbery to the five people inside. He says the 27-year-old homeowner drew his own weapon and shot the suspect, killing him. Authorities didn't immediately identify him. Small says two women in the home also went to get their guns, but investigators don't believe they used their weapons. Authorities found cash and what appears to be marijuana nearby. The five people in the house were taken for questioning. No charges have been filed.

Phillies third baseman Maikel Franco has filed a grievance against the team for allegedly manipulating his service time in order to delay his eligibility for free agency. By holding Franco in Triple A with the Iron Pigs until May 15th the Phillies effectively keep the top prospect from free agency for an extra year. Franco’s agent is trying to work amicably with the team’s new management. The decision to keep Franco in the minors happened before the arrival of new President, Andy McPhail and General Manager, Matt Klentak.

Two Washington High School students were arrested Monday and charged with aggravated assault after allegedly attacking a teacher in his classroom at the Northeast Philadelphia school. Three students entered the classroom looking for a cellphone held by another teen in the room. The trio did not belong in the class, and interrupted a lesson in progress. In trying to get the cellphone, they assaulted the teacher. The teacher, who suffered injuries to his face, was seen by the school nurse and taken to a hospital for observation. The students, who remained in police custody Monday afternoon, have been referred for a School District disciplinary hearing that could lead to their expulsion.
