Dow DuPont Merger; Senate Passes Liquor Bill; SEPTA Talking Buses Coming in 2016

Dow Chemical and DuPont agreed today to combine and become Dow DuPont. Once the merger is complete, the two companies plan to split into three separate entities, focused on agricultural chemicals, specialty products and materials. By joining together to break into three separate companies later gives Dow and DuPont the ability to choose the best products in their research pipeline and shut down the rest. Job cuts are expected and the deal will get rigorous antitrust scrutiny. Dow has more than 1,700 employees and extensive real estate holdings in southeastern Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Senate passed a liquor privatization bill that could also help end the budget stalemate. The measure allows restaurants, hotels and some grocery stores to sell up to four bottles of wine. However, the bill could face problems in the house where Republicans favor a stronger privatization measure. Supporters say the measure, would improve state-owned stores, but critics say it'll put state stores out of business. Governor Tom Wolf supports the measure.

Coming to Philadelphia in 2016 – more talking SEPTA buses. By springtime the agency expects to begin installing a system on its 1,400 buses that provide audio and visual cues to keep pedestrians safe from buses. The agency ended in October an eight-month pilot program that gave 12 buses gear to issue verbal and visual warnings to walkers too distracted by texting or talking as they crossed busy streets. These buses had flashing lights and a Robocop-like warning that said, “Pedestrians, bus is turning.” The response from bus operators was overwhelmingly positive
