Taxi Protest Clocks Center City; Kathleen Kane Received Emails?; Tot Dies at North Philly Child Care

Hundreds of cabs and Uber Black limo drivers from the Taxi Workers Alliance and the Philadelphia Limo Association blocked the streets around City Hall this afternoon in protest of ride sharing services UberX and Lyft. The protest started around 12:30 pm and caused big traffic problems around Center City. Ride sharing services currently operate unregulated in the city of Philadelphia and do not pay for licenses, undergo additional inspections, pay for commercial insurance, undergo proper background checks, or carry expensive taxi medallions. Cab drivers also complain that with the added competition at cheaper prices they are not able to make a living. The protest ended a little after 1:30 pm.

Uber statement:
"Many taxi and limousine drivers are understandably frustrated because the Philadelphia Parking Authority's outdated rules make it harder to earn a living when the public has shown they want more affordable options. Each year, the PPA requires limousine drivers to pay $404 per vehicle for a PPA sticker and $130 for their chauffeur's permit to be renewed. They also subject drivers to obsolete vehicle restrictions and onerous insurance requirements. We believe statewide reform of the PPA that allows for regulated ridesharing will benefit both riders and drivers."

An assistant prosecutor with the Philadelphia District Attorney's office revealed a surprising twist in the ongoing "Porngate" scandal. The revelation followed a hearing where Philadelphia House Democrat Louise Bishop entered a no contest plea for an ethics violation tied to the sting case dropped by Attorney General Kathleen Kane (Bishop will receive 6 months probation and will resign her office.) Assistant Philadelphia DA Mark Gilson was being interviewed and was asked about the e-mail scandal involving the investigators on the sting case that are now working in Philadelphia. He said, “When is Kathleen Kane going to release the 58 emails that her sister got… or the 11 that were forwarded to her? What about those emails?” Kane has released a handful of emails containing inappropriate material, but is holding back on many more. She has been criticized for the selective method and seeming targeted approach of their release.

Police are investigating the death of a 10-month-old girl at a North Philadelphia day care early this afternoon. It happened at the Sister’s Childcare Center on the 3500 block of Germantown Avenue. The baby's uncle found daycare worker's performing CPR on his niece when he stopped by to check on her around noon. She was rushed to Temple University Hospital which was two blocks away and was pronounced dead around 12:45 pm. Police are treating this as a suspicious death and the Special Victims Unit is investigating.

Tonight,
Cloudy, temperatures around 50 degrees this evening in Center City
