Philadelphia's new police commissioner was sworn in today at his alma mater in North Philly. 51-year-old Richard Ross is a familiar face in the force. The 26-year veteran joined the department in 1989 and most recently served as First Deputy Commissioner under departing Charles Ramsey. The ceremony was held at Central High, just blocks from where Ross grew up. Mayor Jim Kenney presided over the swearing in ceremony while District Attorney Seth Williams held the Bible. Ross acknowledges that it is "a challenging time for law enforcement" and that they must work on community relations. He also stressed that communities and neighborhoods must also work together to reduce crime and increase safety.

A Philadelphia police officer has been suspended with the intent to dismiss following an arrest for assault in Upper Darby last month. 35-year-old Officer Deric Lewis was charged with simple assault and harassment following a domestic altercation with a women while off-duty on December 28th. Outgoing Commissioner Charles Ramsey suspended Lewis on Monday. Lewis allegedly failed to identify himself to Upper Darby officers and acted disorderly. This is the second time he has been suspended. The first time came in 2010, also because of a domestic altercation with a women in Upper Darby.

Philadelphia police are searching for three teenagers who caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to a construction site in the city's Logan neighborhood last month. It happened on the 4400 block of North Broad Street on December 4th. Surveillance footage caught the teens breaking in several times. They are seen punching and kicking holes in sheet rock, spray painting walls and equipment, and breaking tables. The project manager discovered the damage the next morning and estimates the damage at $5,000. The suspects are described as 1) Black male, 14-17 years old, medium complected, medium build and wearing a dark hooded jacket with a Puma logo on the upper front, gray sweatpants and grayish Nike sneakers with red and orange laces 2) Black male, 14-17 years old, medium complected, thin build and wearing a dark hooded jacket with an Eagles logo on the front with "Eagles" on the back, dark pants and white and black sneakers 3) Black male, 14-17 years old, medium complected, thin build and wearing a dark long sleeved thermal-style shirt, dark pants and grayish sneakers. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 215.686.TIPS (8477) or text a tip to PPD TIP (773847).
