Philly Roads Need Plowing; Christie Apologizes; PA Turnpike Delays Closure and Detour

Snow removal is happening gradually across Philadelphia. Over 21,000 people reported their roads still needed plowing to the city's 311 hotline. The blizzard of 2016 generated 8 times the normal call volume plus another 6,000 requests through social media. If you've called and still haven't seen a plow, officials say hang on to your claim number, so workers can keep track of your request. Officials say until crews can get to your street, you can lend a hand too, by cleaning snow from storm drains and fire hydrants.

New Jersey Governor and Republican presidential hopeful Chris Christie is apologizing and backtracking on some comments he made after the weekend storm caused serious flooding at the shore. When asked if he thought it might be too soon to leave his home state to resume his campaign, he sarcastically asked if he was expected to go back down there with a mop. Christie also apologized for criticizing North Wildwood’s mayor who compared the storm damage to Superstorm Sandy.

Plans to close an 86-mile stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike have been postponed because workers need to retrieve a tractor-trailer that went over an embankment during the weekend's snow storm. Instead of closing Wednesday, the westbound lanes will close for approximately three hours starting about 9 a.m. Thursday from Breezewood to New Stanton. Traffic will be detoured onto Interstates 70 and 68 to U.S. Route 119, where vehicles can re-enter the toll road at New Stanton. Turnpike officials say the more than 100-mile detour is necessary because of the volume of traffic being re-routed.
