Two Black Female Judges a First; Former Charter School Sold; Hillary Visits Philly

For the first time, two African American women will serve as the top judges in the Philadelphia court system. Judges Jacqueline Allen (left) and Sheila Woods-Skipper will serve key roles. Allen was appointed administrative judge of the trial division of Common Pleas Court, which includes the system's busiest and most prestigious criminal and civil courtrooms. Judge Woods-Skipper, already the president judge of Common Pleas Court, will chair the system's administrative governing board. The board pulls together leaders from the system's various branches - Common Pleas Court, Municipal Court, Orphans Court, and Family Court. Together, the two women, both Democrats, will help control a system with a $110 million annual budget and a 2,400-member workforce of employees with no civil service protection.

An investment group has purchased the site of the now-closed Walter D. Palmer Charter School near Northern Liberties, with plans for the parcel that could include housing and retail use. American Investment Partners acquired the 1.5-acre parcel at 910 N. Sixth St. on Jan. 15th for an undisclosed price. The transaction, about a year after the Palmer school abandoned the property is part of a busy time in real estate activity in the West Poplar neighborhood, just west of heavily redeveloped Northern Liberties.

Hillary Clinton was in Philadelphia yesterday. The Democratic presidential hopeful attended a fundraiser at the Navy Yard where Jon Bon Jovi was scheduled to play an acoustic set for contributors. About 200 people attended the event at financial firm, Franklin Square Capital Partners. She also used the Philadelphia stop to meet with nearly 50 black clergy at the historic Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church.
