PA Gov. Tom Wolf Has Cancer; Man With Machete Arrested at Penn; NJ Drinking Age 18?

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced today that he is suffering from a treatable form of prostrate cancer. He said that it was detected several months ago and confirmed through tests recently. Wolf said that doctors detected the cancer in its early stages during routine checkups. “What I’m going through is treatable and actually will not impair my ability, will not interfere with my duties as governor,” he said. Wolf plans to take a couple of days off with his family before starting treatment. He did not reveal the nature of that treatment but did say they would be minor and not involve chemotherapy.

A man carrying a machete was arrested this morning inside a library at the University of Pennsylvania. It started at 11:25 a.m. when a Penn employee called police after seeing a man walking down the street carrying a large knife. The employee followed at a safe distance and told police the man walked into Van Pelt Library. Officers cleared the building of students and found 39-year-old Michael West on the fourth floor. He was arrested without incident. West was also carrying a box cutter and a stolen ID. Apparently West is homeless and found the machete on the street. He has been walking around with it for several days.

Just as a bill raising the minimum age for tobacco use in New Jersey to 21 has advanced in the state Assembly, one NJ lawmaker has introduced a bill that would lower the drinking age to 18. Republican Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll has recently put forth the measure, arguing if 18-year-olds can serve in the military they should be able to be served alcohol. Don't expect the Jersey Shore to become a Spring Break mecca for college kids who suddenly find themselves of age in the Garden State. A 1984 federal law holds back millions in highway funding from states who do not have a 21 minimum drinking age.

The Philadelphia Eagles have released 31-year-old LB DeMeco Ryans. Ryans spent 4 years in Philadelphia.
