Deer-Vehicle Collision Season

Last year in Pennsylvania, eight people died and more than 600 were injured in 3,000 crashes involving deer, according to PennDOT.

Nationwide, about 200 people die and tens of thousands are injured in about 1.6 million deer-vehicle crashes that result in more than $3.6 billion in vehicle damage, according to AAA.

Fall is typically the most dangerous period, as mating season adds to the hazards. Autumn hunting seasons also get deer moving.

The basic advice: Be sure to wear a seatbelt. Slow down. Keep a safe distance from the car in front of you. Also, know that seeing one deer often means others may follow.

"As motorists are enjoying the beautiful fall foliage, they need to be mindful that deer are literally on the prowl with only one goal in sight – finding a mate," said Tracy Noble, spokewoman for AAA Mid-Atlantic.

Use your horn to scare deer.

"Never swerve," says AAA. "Instead, slow down and brake. Swerving can cause you to lose control of your vehicle and strike another vehicle or object along the roadway."

"If a crash with a deer is unavoidable, AAA recommends slowing down and releasing your foot from the brake before impact. This will raise the front end of the car during the crash and increase the likelihood that the animal will go underneath the vehicle instead of through the windshield."

To report a dead deer on a Pennsylvania road, call 1-800-349-7623 (1-800-FIX-ROAD).
