Sgt. Robert Wilson III Medal of Valor; Former Penn Prof Denied Release

Philadelphia Police Sgt. Robert Wilson III was posthumously honored today at a ceremony at the White House. Wilson's grandmother Constance accepted the National Medal of Valor from President Obama. The award is the highest honor for a public safety officer. It is given for acting with "exceptional courage, extraordinary decisiveness and presence of mind" and with "unusual swiftness of action, regardless of his or her personal safety, in an attempt to save or protect human life." In March of 2015, Sgt. Wilson was killed in a gun battle while confronting two armed robbers at a North Philadelphia GameStop store. Wilson was purchasing a gift for his son's birthday. 12 other officers from around the country were also honored today.

A former University of Pennsylvania economics professor who pled guilty to beating his wife to death in 2007 in their Upper Merion home has been denied his final request for early release. Rafael Robb admitted to bludgeoning his wife, Ellen Gregory Robb, to death a few days before Christmas 2006 as she was wrapping presents. In a plea deal he was sentenced to 5-10 years for voluntary manslaughter. Robb will serve out the full term of his sentence and will be released in 2017 followed by 10 years probation. The Gregory family has been fighting his early release each time. They got help from DA Risa Ferman and State Rep Mike Vereb when Robb was about to be released at 5 years. Vereb eventually got a law passed to allow victims and families to go before the parole board.
