North Philadelphia Police Involved Shooting, Celebration of Black Arts, First Friday Turns 25

Philadelphia Police announced a police involved shooting that took place on Tuesday night. Officials say the shooting took place around 11:15 p.m. The shooting occurred at Broad Street and Tioga Street in North Philadelphia. Authorities say an off-duty Philadelphia Police officer discharged their weapon at a green Monte Carlo. The vehicle was last seen heading north on Broad Street. At this time, police say it is unclear what led to the shooting. They do not know if anyone inside the car was hit.

The 32nd annual Celebration of Black Arts Festival came to an end Tuesday night at the African American Museum of Philadelphia. It culminated with a screening about, and an appearance by, a major contributor to the Black Arts Movement. She’s not from here, but the Art Sanctuary’s Valerie Gay says the city has claimed Sonia Sanchez. A documentary on the life of the poet, scholar and social activist was shown on the final night of the month-long festival. It’s called BadDDD Sonia Sanchez.
Dozens attended the screening, including Sonia.

It’s a special milestone for one of Old City’s most popular events. First Friday has been an institution in Philadelphia now for a quarter century. Old City has probably the most art galleries per capita in Philadelphia, and in 1991, some of those galleries and businesses got together and said ‘why don’t we keep our doors open late’? A reception was held Tuesday night to celebrate the occasion. The founders of First Friday and those that contributed to its growth over the years were honored.
