50 Dead, 53 Injured in Mass Shooting at Gay Night Club in Orlando, FL

50 people have been killed and 53 wounded in a mass shooting inside a gay nightclub in Florida early Sunday morning. It happened at 2 a.m. at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. The gunman was carrying an assault rifle and a handgun. He has been identified as 29-year-old U.S.-born citizen Omar Mateen who was living in St Lucie County, FL. Mateen took hostages inside the club. At around 5 a.m., SWAT entered the club and killed Mateen in a firefight.

Mateen was born in New York City to Afghani parents. He had legally purchased the two weapons within the past two weeks. He had called 911 just before the shooting to pledge his allegiance to the Islamic State and ISIS and also mentioned the Boston bombing. Mateen had been on the federal terrorist radar in the past as a sympathizer but never had any plans. Authorities are trying to determine if he had any connections to terrorist groups or if he was acting as a lone wolf.

This is the largest shooting in U.S. history. President Obama decried this as an "act of terror" and an "act of hate." He ordered flag to fly at half-staff. The FBI is investigating this as an act of terrorism. Hundreds around the Orlando area are lining up to give blood.

STATEMENT OF ARCHBISHOP CHARLES J. CHAPUT, O.F.M. CAP.
REGARDING SHOOTINGS IN ORLANDO

The recent violent acts committed in Orlando are horrific and they fill all of us with an unspeakable sadness. Innocent and precious lives were lost in a senseless and evil way. The family and friends of those who perished now shoulder a heavy burden of grief and suffering.

As Christians, our duty is to pray for those whose lives were ended by the inexcusable cruelty of others and to ask God to pour his comforting grace upon all those who are in mourning.

Archbishop of Philadelphia

Statement from Holy See on Orlando shooting:

ranslation of the statement:
The terrible massacre that has taken place in Orlando, with its dreadfully high number of innocent victims, has caused in Pope Francis, and in all of us, the deepest feelings of horror and condemnation, of pain and turmoil before this new manifestation of homicidal folly and senseless hatred. Pope Francis joins the families of the victims and all of the injured in prayer and in compassion. Sharing in their indescribable suffering he entrusts them to the Lord so they may find comfort. We all hope that ways may be found, as soon as possible, to effectively identify and contrast the causes of such terrible and absurd violence which so deeply upsets the desire for peace of the American people and of the whole of humanity
