Philadelphia School District Discrimination Judgement; NJ Gas Tax Hike; Villanova Inmate Education
  by: iradiotom - Philadelphia, PA

A federal jury has entered a $2.3 million judgment against the Philadelphia School District and late Superintendent Arlene Ackerman, finding she discriminated against a Bucks County company by steering a $7.5 million no-bid contract to a smaller, minority-owned firm that had not sought the work. Newtown-based Security & Data Technologies filed the racial discrimination suit after Ackerman and the School District deselected it in 2010 for a contract to install surveillance cameras. Ackerman told several administrators at the time that she was sick of the district giving work to contractors who did not look like her and that she would make sure that "all these white boys didn't get contracts."

Overnight with the support of Governor Chris Christie, the Democrat-led New Jersey state Assembly passed sweeping legislation to hike the state's gasoline tax by 23 cents per gallon, while cutting the sales tax from 7 to 6 percent. It would also pay the state's transportation trust fund $2 billion a year over the next eight years. It now heads to the Senate.

Villanova University has been selected for a new federal Inmate Education Pilot Program. Under the program, inmates will attend Villanova University as part of the Second Chance Pell pilot program. Villanova is one of four Pennsylvania colleges that will participate giving inmates access to post-secondary education with the goal of helping them get jobs upon release. Bloomsburg University, Lehigh Carbon Community College and Indiana University of Pennsylvania were also selected.

The Phillies are in Arizona tonight with the Cardinals.
