Marion Campbell, who played on the Eagles' 1960 championship team and later became their head coach for three seasons, passed away Wednesday in Plano, Texas. Campbell, whose nickname was the "Swamp Fox," was the Defensive Coordinator for Dick Vermeil and then succeeded Vermeil as head coach. Marion Campbell was 87. He is the second former Eagles head coach to die in the last three weeks. Buddy Ryan, who replaced Campbell, died on June 28. "Marion Campbell will be missed by the Eagles community but also remembered for his spirited impact on our game," Eagles owner Jeff Lurie said in a statement. "Like Chuck Bednarik, he was a great two-way player during a special era in NFL history. He played with the type of toughness that our town so deeply admires." Born in Chester, S.C., Campbell starred at the University of Georgia. He spent eight seasons in the NFL, the first two with the San Francisco 49ers and the final six with the Eagles.

Authorities in Louisiana are investigating whether the gunman who shot and killed three officers and wounded three others had any help. But authorities believe that Gavin Long, a former Marine, was the lone shooter in Sunday morning's assault. The deaths of the two Baton Rouge officers and a sheriff's deputy followed the shooting deaths of five Dallas officers and the deaths of black men by police. Confronting another killing of police officers, President Barack Obama urged Americans to tamp down inflammatory words and actions as a violent summer collides with the nation's heated presidential campaign. Obama said the motive behind Sunday's killing of three officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was still unknown. It was the latest in a string of deadly incidents involving law enforcement.

Police say a man and woman were found dead in a room at a northeast Philadelphia motel. Officers were called just before 12:30 p.m. Sunday to the Roosevelt Motor Inn in the Oxford Circle neighborhood for what appears to be a double homicide. The victims were found "with white plastic bags over their heads and their hands tied behind their backs." Emergency medical personnel responded and pronounced both victims dead at the scene about 10 minutes later. Police said no arrests had been made. There was no immediate word on a cause of death.
