Ride sharing companies operating in Philadelphia gained a victory in court on Friday; a halt to the cease and desist order levied against them on Thursday. Commonwealth Court appeals Judge Robert Simpson halted the injuction put in place by Judge Linda Carpenter as part of a lawsuit filed by the Taxi Workers Alliance of Philadelphia. UberX and Lyft operated over the summer under temporary authorization from the state. That agreement expired on September 30th. The Philadelphia Parking Authority had vowed to enforce regulations again, but they can't do much more than ticket and tow drivers. Violators of the injunction were subject to being held in contempt of court. Neither of the two services stopped driving despite the order. They look forward towards October 17th when Pennsylvania lawmakers are due to vote on ride sharing legislation.

Uber, based in San Fransisco, issued this statement:
After today's victory in Commonwealth Court, Uber is no longer subject to Judge Carpenter's cease and desist order. Uber celebrates riders and drivers staying on the road in Philadelphia, but the Commonwealth still needs permanent ridesharing legislation from the General Assembly. If Harrisburg does not act in the next two weeks, hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians could again lose access to affordable transportation and meaningful income opportunities.

The Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ will close its doors for good on Monday morning. Owner Carl Icahn announced in August that he was going to close the casino after losing tens of millions of dollars as a result of striking union members. Members of the Local 54 of the Unite-HERE union began striking on July 1st. They demanded the restoration of heath insurance and pension benefits. Those were stripped out of union contracts during bankruptcy restructuring. Some 3,000 jobs will be lost. That does not include the hit to nearby businesses. The Taj had 1,250 rooms. Ten, formerly Revel, is expected to open next year and would be hiring.

Comedian and Upper Darby-native, Tina Fey, was honored today at Temple University with the Lew Klein Excellence in the Media Award. She spoke at the reception when accepting the award and lead a conversation on campus with students taking questions. She talked about the uniqueness of Philadelphians, being real, working hard, and being a nice person. Her father and brother both went to Temple’s School of Media and Communications. Tina and her brother Peter started the Donald H. Fey Memorial Scholarship when their father passed away last year. It helps veterans study communications at Temple.
